New service for older people with dementia comes to Hillingdon

“Living Well” – Age UK Hillingdon, Alzheimer’s Society Hillingdon and Royal Voluntary Service to provide day activities for older people with dementia

Three Hillingdon charities have linked up to provide a “Living Well” service for older people with dementia from the Hillingdon wards of Botwell, Pinkwell, Townfield, Yiewsley, West Drayton and Heathrow Villages. Starting from 18 September and then every Wednesday from 10am – 3pm, service users can come together at the Age UK Hillingdon Townfield Community Centre in Townfield Road, Hayes to play games, prepare food, take part in gentle exercise and much more. Most of all it will be an ideal way for socialising and making new friends over cups of tea and a freshly prepared lunch.

The activities will be lead by Alzheimer’s Society staff and supported by volunteers from all three charities. Users of “Living Well” will also be able to benefit from other services for older people with dementia such as the Befriending scheme of the Royal Voluntary Service, comprehensive dementia support services provided by Alzheimer’s and Age UK Hillingdon’s range of services, aimed at improving health and wellbeing.

The service is kindly funded for three years by the Hillingdon Community Trust which is a local grant-making trust funding voluntary and community projects and activities in the Hillingdon wards of Botwell, Pinkwell, Townfield, Yiewsley, West Drayton and Heathrow Villages. The leading local representatives for their charities, Chris Commerford from Age UK Hillingdon, Linda Matthews from Alzheimer’s Society Hillingdon and André Knirsch from the Royal Voluntary Service have expressed their delight about the funding received for this scheme and describe it as a great opportunity to combine their charities’ experience and resources to support older people with dementia. They are now looking forward for this joint initiative to come into life and for many service users to enjoy themselves.
