Rural Activities Garden Centre Faces Closure: Act Before 26 June

About the Centre
For over 40 years, RAGC has provided a therapeutic, horticultural environment where adults with learning disabilities can take part in meaningful activities that support their wellbeing, confidence, and independence. The centre also produces plants, eggs, and honey for sale to the public — making it a valued part of the local community.
Why is it under review?
According to the Council, the centre operated at a financial loss of £137,000 in the last year. In response, they have proposed closing the site and relocating services to the Civic Centre’s gardens and local voluntary sector partners. The Council says this approach would help maintain high-quality, sustainable services for vulnerable residents.
Cllr Eddie Lavery, Cabinet Member for Residents' Services, stated:
“Our aim is to deliver high-quality services for our most vulnerable residents, but we also need to ensure we provide value for money for the taxpayer.”

What have people said?
The proposed closure has raised concerns among families, residents, and professionals. Many believe the centre offers a unique environment that cannot be easily replaced.
At a recent public meeting (30 May), carers, service users, and a local GP shared concerns about the potential impact of closing the centre, which many described as a vital support space.
One resident said:
“It’s not just a garden centre – it’s a place where people with learning disabilities are understood, supported, and allowed to thrive.”
An official petition opposing the closure has been launched through the Council website. You can read and sign it here:
